Snowden trained as hacker while with National Security Agency

More details about the mysterious past of

Edward Snowden, the former contractor for the

National Security Agency who leaked details

about the agency's surveillance program, are

starting to emerge. Snowden, who is reportedly currently holed up in

an airport in Moscow, was taught all he needed

to know about hacking while he was working for

the NSA, according to The New York Times. And those are the very

skills that he would have

needed in order to snoop into the records that he

accessed. His resume, which hasn't been made public but

was described to the Times by people who have

seen it, touted his training in a course for

"certified ethical hackers ." A certified ethical hacker is a

professional certification handed out

by the International Council of E-Commerce Consultants (EC-Council)

for those who are trained to detect vulnerabilities in organizations'

systems using the same knowledge and tools as

a hacker. These details reveal just the sort of skills that

the NSA is desperate for when it comes to new

recruits -- but they're also the very skills that put

it at risk. "If he's looking inside U.S. government networks

for foreign intrusions, he might have very broad

access," James A. Lewis, a computer security

expert at the Center for Strategic and

International Studies, told the Times. "The

hacker got into the storeroom." Snowden has said he took a job as an

infrastructure analyst with Booz Allen Hamilton in

order to gather evidence on the NSA's

surveillance program. He prepared his resume

touting his hacking skills shortly before applying

for that job, while he was working for the NSA with Dell, according to

the Times.

Dell eyes wearable computing move as PC business keeps slumping

Struggling computer maker Dell is

considering a move into the

"wearable computing" space, as it

grapples with the effects of a

shrinking PC market. Sam Burd, Dell's global vice-

president of personal computing,

told the Guardian that "we're

exploring ideas in that space". The idea of computers that can be

worn on the body has become one

of the hottest spaces in the

technology business. Google has

thousands of people testing its

head-mounted Glass system, while the Californian company Pebble has

sold more than 85,000 of its

Bluetooth-connected "smart

watches". Persistent rumours

suggest that Apple will introduce an

"iWatch", while companies including Samsung, iPhone maker Foxconn,

Sony, LG and Philips have

announced – but in only a few

cases unveiled – wearable devices. "There are challenges in cost, and

how to make it a really good

experience," Burd told the Guardian.

"But the piece that's interesting is

that computers are getting smaller.

Having a watch on your wrist – that's pretty interesting, pretty

appealing."

With Dell preparing to take the

company private in a $24bn

leveraged buyout as the PC market

– the field which its founder and

chief executive Michael Dell first

exploited – begins to shrink in importance, the company is seeking

new sources of income. "Looking ahead five years, we

expect devices and form factors to

continue to change. There will still

be a need for 'static' computing on

desktops, but there will be a real

need for mobile devices. There's a lot of discussion about how that fits

into wearable devices like we've

seen with Google Glass and

watches. We're looking at a world

of lots of connected devices. "I don't see any magic new form

factor like the iPad – I don't think

anybody saw how that was going to

change devices. But the number of

[computing] devices per person is

exploding." On wearables, he said "we haven't announced anything,

but we are looking at the technology

in that space." Dell needs to add new revenue

streams as some larger customers

have slowed spending amid

economic belt-tightening. Though

the company has large enterprise

and services businesses, they have revolved around its PC business as

a means of winning services

contracts. But that is under threat. Dell's PC

revenues shrank by 9% to $8.9bn in

the three months ending in May

compared with the year before, and

income slumped 65% to $224m – a

2.5% margin. It has also been pushed into third place in the global

PC market by China's Lenovo, which

is now just behind the largest PC

maker, HP. And worse is to come, suggests the

research company IDC: it forecasts that global sales of PC desktops and

laptops will fall by nearly 8% this

year, the second year of decline in

a row – and expects they will keep

falling in 2014. Instead, tablets and "hybrid" devices

such as Microsoft's Surface are

expected to become increasingly

important; tablets like the iPad are

expected to outsell laptops this

year, and PCs (counted as laptops and desktops) by the end of 2015.

But Burd admitted that Dell has so

far only sold "hundreds of

thousands" of its XPS-10 and

Latitude 10 tablets, which

respectively run Microsoft's

Windows RT and Windows 8 software. However he added "I

think that's pretty exciting when we

look at the ramp [in purchasing]

that we expect from corporate

customers." He said Windows 8 on tablets had

not done well so far with the large

companies that make up a

substantial proportion of Dell's

customers. "Businesses are slow to

adopt a new operating system," he said. "But tablets really need

Windows 8 to sell well. Still, it is

encouraging to see some

businesses deploying Windows 8

and tablets. It's going to take some

time, and the jury is still out. IDC's numbers says that Windows 8 on

tablets is still far smaller than the

iPad, but there are successes.

Maybe in a few years when we get

to Windows 8 tablets being a third

or 40% of tablet volume we can feel it's happening. Tablets are

definitely an important piece of the

computing business." More broadly though the decline in

traditional PC sales is putting severe

pressure on Dell's revenues and

profits, driving the company to seek

to go private in a $24bn private

equity buyout and end its 25-year stock market listing. Burd insisted

that "the PC business

is important to us. It's how we

started as a company, and where

we have strong share globally. Lots

has been written about the demise

of the PC business, we we think it's an interesting area going

forward." The rapid growth of the tablet

market since the introduction of the

iPad in 2010 has seen Dell struggle

to keep up. Going private could help, thinks

Burd: "Michael Dell believes we are

on the right page for

transformation," he said. "The view

is that we can get ourselves out of

the quarterly reporting process where you can't make hard

decisions to speed up that

transformation." The company has struggled to make

an impact in the fast-growing

smartphone and tablet market. It

killed off its range of Android

phones after having effectively

invented the "phablet" range in 2010 with its Dell Streak 5in

smartphone. Flaws in the software

led to low sales, and the category

of a phone with a mini-tablet sized

screen was grabbed by South

Korea's Samsung, which has turned

it into a sector where it dominates through its Galaxy Note products.

Twitter tests feature that connects 140-character messages to longer form stories

Twitter is trying out a tweet-enhancing feature that connects 140-character messages to longer form stories mentioning them in an apparent effort to add context to real-time bursts of information.
Sunday, Twitter user Mikko Hypponen noticed that one of his tweets included a list of media sites where the tweet was embedded. The feature, entitled "embedded on these websites," lists the websites' names, includes article headlines, and links through to destination URLs, based on the screenshot shared by Hypponen.
Twitter declined to comment on the tweet addition, and the feature seems to be only available in limited release. In May, Twitter disclosed that it often tests variations of the tweet form factor to gauge users' preferences around supplemental tweet details.
"A Tweet may be our basic unit of communication, but it also contains a universe," Twitter Director Othman Laraki said at the time.
Articles with embedded tweets certainly qualify as part of a tweet's universe. Should Twitter roll out the feature more widely, it could become a valuable tool that helps users track down and make sense of news related to breaking news or celebrity outbursts.

World’s first telescopic contact lens gives you Superman-like vision, turn wearer into cyborg

Interested in upgrading your eyeballs? Well, a team of DARPA-funded researchers led by Joseph Ford of UC San Diego recently published a proposal for a new type of telescopic contact lens in Optics Express. Designed for people with age-related macular degeneration, the lenses are only 1.17mm thick and can magnify images up to 2.8 times. Their layered construction admits light near the outer edge of the lens, bouncing it across a series of tiny aluminum mirrors before transmitting it to the back of the retina, kind of like the origami-optics lens. Telescopic sight can be toggled on and off by using a pair of 3D glasses to switch the polarization of the central part of the lens. It sounds promising, but the lenses -- pictured after the break -- currently have some obstacles, like gas-impermeable materials unsuitable for long-term wear and sub-par image quality

Don't buy a new PC or Mac before you read this

While summer break has just started for students across the country, that means that the all-important back-to-school shopping season is not far behind. And with it comes a flood of new or updated systems -- everything from traditional laptops and desktops to tablets and hybrids.
But before swiping your credit card on a new ultrabook, all-in-one, or convertible, you're going to want to dive a little deeper into the spec sheets. That's because the latest Intel CPU upgrade -- code named Haswell, but officially known as "fourth-generation Core i series" -- is offering significant battery life improvements in the first wave of laptops we've tested so far. So, unlike the more ho-hum Intel updates we've seen in years past, there's a real-world payoff in seeking out a Haswell-equipped laptop.
On the other hand, if battery life isn't a big concern -- if you're going for a desktop PC, or if you have a "desktop replacement" laptop

Apple MacBook Air Review

Apple's new 11- and 13-inch MacBook Air laptops, however, promise to go the distance with all-day battery life. Announced at Apple's WWDC conference earlier this month, the new laptops don't look any different from the outside, but on the inside they have been given complete makeovers with Intel's latest Haswell processors. They also now pack more storage for the price; the 11-inch model with 128 GB of storage, which previously only had 64 GB, starts at $999.
No, the new Airs aren't drastically different -- at least not to the naked eye -- but the small changes go a long way. Quite literally.

The new MacBook Airs could be put on a police lineup with the old MacBook Airs and not even the best detective would be able to tell them apart. The exteriors of the laptops are indistinguishable from the previous versions. But that's not

Google Adsense: Celebrating 10 years of shared success

Ten years ago we launched AdSense to help publishers earn money by placing relevant ads on their websites. I can still remember the excitement and anticipation as AdSense went live that first day.
Our small team huddled together in a cramped conference room, and right away we saw that publishers were as excited about AdSense as we were.
Fast-forward 10 years, and AdSense has become a core part of Google’s advertising business. The AdSense community has grown to include more than 2 million publishers, and last year alone, publishers earned more than $7 billion from AdSense. AdSense is a community that thrives because of all the content creators we are so fortunate to partner with. Their stories inspire us to do our part to make AdSense great.

On this occasion, it’s especially inspiring to hear the stories of partners who have been with us since the very beginning—like a retiree in New Zealand who was able to pursue her dream of writing about her garden, a tech support expert in Colorado who can spend more time with his kids, and a theme park reviewer who now sends employees around the world to test and review rides—all thanks to money earned from AdSense.

As part of our 10th anniversary celebration, we hope you’ll tune into our live Hangout on Air today at 10 a.m. PDT (5 p.m. GMT) on the AdSense Google+ page. I look forward to joining several of our partners to share stories from the early days of AdSense, talk about how we’ve all grown since then, and discuss the future for publishers and online advertising. And if you want even more 10th anniversary celebration, just visit our AdSense 10th anniversary page at any time

Finally, a Google Glass in helmet form is coming....

Sooner or later,  motorcyclists will get to see Google Glass in helmet form, as the project is currently funded on Indiegogo by Livemap with financial backing from the Moscow Department of Science and some other Russia firms.
The motorcycle helmet looks much like the F-35 Fighter jet helmet,  with high-tech solutions and features. It would also come with its own interface — not iOS or Android — and prevent users from watching videos or playing games while riding.

Can Google Fly Its Internet Balloons Wherever It Wants?

The Internet is abuzzblog post:
with news of the first public flight tests in New Zealand of Google’s Project Loon, which aims to provide Internet access to underserved areas using a network of high-altitude balloons. As Google explained in a June 14
We believe that it might actually be possible to build a ring of balloons, flying around the globe on the stratospheric winds, that provides Internet access to the earth below. It’s very early days, but we’ve built a system that uses balloons, carried by the wind at altitudes twice as high as commercial planes, to beam Internet access to the ground at speeds similar to today’s 3G networks or faster. As a result, we hope balloons could become an option for connecting rural, remote, and underserved areas, and for helping with communications after natural disasters. The idea may sound a bit crazy—and

Our minds may be able to control the movement of prosthetic limbs, very soon.

Very soon, we will use our minds to control prosthetic limbs, as the technology is currently been developed by Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and civilian scientists.

According to those who knew well about the product, said the technology works in a way called target muscle  reinnervation, or TMR. It employs the existing nerves near an amputation site, providing the person wearing the prosthesis with the ability to control it directly using signals from those muscles. With the product, the wearer will be able to do all kinds of movement easily.
An ex-Army Staff Sgt. Glen Lehman, who was said to have injured in Iraq, tried the new technology and it works so well for him.
